About the Italian Design 2023 Artcurial auction
Artcurial’s Italian Design auction is a true testament to the multifaceted creativity of iconic Italian designers. It features interpretations of European furniture classics by Gio Ponti alongside surprising creations by the Superstudio Group and Gae Aulenti, as well as pieces characterized by remarkable glasswork. Blending craftsmanship and inventiveness, the auction offers a diverse panorama of Italian design.
The sale highlights historical pieces of exceptional quality. Among them is a historic desk from the limited series of unique pieces by Gio Ponti (estimated at €50,000 – €80,000), entirely veneered in walnut burl and symbolizing the designer’s friendship with Tony Bouilhet, director of the Christofle house. It will be accompanied by a pair of original fabric armchairs by the same creator, inspired by 18th-century bergères, from the Settebello train that first connected Naples to Rome (estimated at €22,000 – €24,000). An important 1934 walnut-veneered chest of drawers in perfect condition also showcases Gio Ponti’s architectural genius and Fontana Arte’s craftsmanship (estimated at €50,000 – €70,000).
The auction will highlight the inventiveness of Italian designers, notably through Gae Aulenti’s « Rimorchiatore » table lamp, which also functions as a vase, ashtray, and sculpture (estimated at €4,000 – €6,000). This creativity is further evidenced by the contrast of materials, particularly in the « Bazaar » sofa by the Superstudio Group, made of resin and pink fur, estimated between €60,000 and €80,000. It will be accompanied by a significant suspension lamp by Gino Sarfatti, featuring frosted glass diffusers and a white lacquered metal structure (estimated at €30,000 – €50,000).
